275 dead

In the last four hours, about 275 Americans died from heart disease.

Just a little perspective.

Don't get us wrong--what happened today in Minneapolis was a tragedy, and it is an interesting and horrible news story, and the people who are affected deserve our consideration.

But then there is this.

Never underestimate the power of 25,560 people who don't know any of the people affected in Minneapolis, racing to show their "concern" and to preach about how these people are in their prayers (but not the 275 who just died of heart disease) and to whine about "perspective," each to 25,559 other people who don't know any of the people affected in Minneapolis, on an internet message board that nobody in Minnesota (except maybe Torii Hunter, God love him, or Tarvaris Jackson) has ever heard of or will ever see, to destroy Smarter Hogville's capacity to feel anything good about those 25,560 people.

Just kidding. We didn't ever have that capacity.

UPDATE:

tomorrow nights Royals-Twins already cancelled. Tonight, 20000 are going to have to get out of the metrodome. Thats what theyre worried about as we speak.
Smarter Hogville Analysis: Figuring out how to get 20,000 people who are in a perfectly safe location out of that location and safely home into their beds, after one of only 15 bridges across a river that they may not need to cross has collapsed, is at the top of officials' concerns list, over and above the couple of dozen people who are missing in that bridge collapse. Reminds us of the time we were in elementary school and a train derailed in the next county, and the railroad workers were more worried about how we'd get home than about the thousands of gallons of diesel fuel that were spilling into the creek from a ruptured tanker car.
